The British Beekeepers’ Association is having difficulty in coping with all its new members and their thirst for information. In fact the above Association now has 20,000 members which is double what it was just three years ago.

The plight of the honeybees
There has been a lot of media interest in the plight of the honeybees but little attention has been given to solitary bees who are also under threat. This is partly why the London Wildlife Trust has built a large bee house near Barking on the banks of the Thames in London to accommodate them. The reason is that this can provide a safe haven for at least thirty of the solitary bee species to be able to lay their eggs. These solitary bees live alone and do not take part in the honey making process. But they do still perform vital pollination services and that is why they need to be protected too.

- parasites
- diseases
