Bee population decimated in the UK last winter
I have just read a report in the British press stating that last winter was a very bad one for the bees in the UK. The overall population declined by about 13.5% and that was just for one winter. In the north east of the country, the loss was even more severe with a record 17.1% decrease noted by beekeepers in that region.
The main reason seems to be poor nutrition and this in turn has a knock on effect on how the bees can resist or build up antibodies against the parasitic mite which is the actual cause of the decimation.
When we look at the question of bee pollen or honey, let us have a look at what the actual difference is between these two marvellous bee products.
Why honey is superior in some ways
Honey has several advantages over bee pollen. The main one is that it is used as a sweetener and it is a very healthy one too. There are 75 different nutrients found in it which is lower than bee pollen. But it is still a marvellous source of energy as it is a great carbohydrate source in that it has 63 calories per teaspoon.
The other great quality of honey is that it is also a rich source of vitamins, minerals and amino acids. However it also has a number of live enzymes which are absolutely crucial for the body systems to work. It is also interesting to note that there are some unidentified elements in it which is one of the reasons why it can not be really artificially reproduced. It would just be lacking in some of these and as yet, nobody knows what they are!
Advantages of bee pollen
Bee pollen probably scores higher than honey because of its protein and amino acid make up. This actually accounts for over one third and estimates vary between 35% and 43%. That is what makes pollen a natural choice for athletes and other sportsmen all over the world for improving their performance.
French scientists discover the great healing power of honey
But honey as a natural antibacterial and healing agent excels . French scientists who worked on forty patients found that their wounds were healed in 88% of the cases and that is a very good result. They were so impressed that they recommended that honey should be an integral part of any antiseptic preparations.
Whatever you want to decide in the bee pollen or honey debate, you can be sure of one thing. That is that bee products have been renowned since the beginning of time as a great healing force and powerful source of essential nutrients.
